Starlight Retro was founded to help preserve the consoles that shaped my childhood. These days many iconic retro gaming systems are in need of repair. Some have faced harsh storage conditions or lived through natural disasters. Damage to boards from issues such as corroded traces and acid leaking from capacitors is becoming increasingly common.
I founded Starlight Retro to help design and produce repair parts to help preserve the legacy of the systems that we love. Located in Saitama, Japan, Starlight Retro operates as a sole proprietorship where I help protect and repair the systems that we love. With a focus on systems from the 1980’s and 1990’s, many of these systems ceased manufacturing 30-40 years ago now. Official repair parts or services have not been available for decades now. As the patents are now long expired on these systems, I am now making open source hardware repair parts with love to help preserve the legacy of these wonderful systems and honor the influence they have had on society and our lives. I don’t want them to disappear.
With a focus on your right to repair and an emphasis on the concept of “repair as produced”, we seek to empower owners to maintain their treasured hardware for decades to come, so that their children and grandchildren can enjoy playing the games that they loved as a child.
Starlight Retro seeks to foster learning, and leave behind design artifacts and documentation that people can freely inspect, repair, adapt, and improve over time. I hope that you will find my parts useful in repairing, restoring, or maintaining the consoles you’ve cherished since childhood.
